Surprisingly, spindles are often an afterthought when people picture their ideal staircase design. But they shouldn’t be! Accounting for much of a staircase’s overall look and feel, they are an important feature.

The truth is, there are so many spindle variations out there it’s impossible to list them all –  but the sheer amount available makes it easy to draw inspiration. There are some important things to consider when it comes to spindles as part of your staircase design ideas that we will highlight in this blog, so you can have a much better idea of which type you should be on the lookout for.

So fear not, we are on hand to help make sense of everything, when the initial staircase design process may start to get a little overwhelming!

What is a spindle and why is it important?

We’re sure you have all seen a spindle before. Near enough all staircases incorporate them, and for good reason! Spindles are the posts situated along the side of the stairs, connecting the base to the handrail at the top. Of course, handrails are a crucial inclusion on any kind of staircase, to ensure there is a way for the person ascending or descending to stabilise themselves if needed.

Without a handrail to grip, the person could lose their footing and potentially fall and injure themselves. Spindles and similarly important. They are needed to ensure that the gap at the side of the stairs is covered, again avoiding someone falling sideways from a potentially great height. So not only do they look the part, but they also have a very important function too.

What kind of spindles are there?

You’ll be pleased to know that there are many spindle solutions out there, so you can perfectly match them up with the rest of your staircase. Whether you have opted for a wooden staircase, or a glass or steel variant, the number of possibilities out there means you are always spoilt for choice!

As with every option, there are pros and cons. If you decide on steel, you will have yourself the strongest material, but it may look out of place in a traditional home. Wood is perhaps the most versatile and is commonplace on many staircases around the world but is much weaker on impact than its steel counterpart.

A glass balustrade may also be an option you explore, to allow natural light to flow freely. The versatility of spindles and balustrades means there are a plethora of ideas to choose from –  you can mix and match or stick to one design.
